Bowlful of Blues, Ojai, California
The pop-up at Ojai’s annual Bowlful of Blues concert was one to repeat. Never have we been so entertained while working! If you have never been, it is a great night of blues music and dancing at the Libbey Bowl in downtown Ojai, the “medina” as we call it. After dark, the carpets shine beautifully under the warm lights of the Darna Design tent. Thanks to Rondia for making space for us at late notice and to all those who paused to admire the carpets during the concert. We hope to do more local Ojai pop-ups in 2018. https://bowlfulofblues.org
Sourcing vintage rugs in Morocco is like finding a needle in the haystack. We followed a lead from a friend in our old hometown of Essaouira and connected with a carpet collector in Marrakech. We were privileged to spend two days with him chatting about the history of the craft in Morocco and unfolding and folding hundreds of rugs from his private collection. He is unique in that he is an artist himself and when he repairs a vintage piece he does it so as to render the carpet whole with his own signature style.

It was our last Sunday in Santa Monica before heading back to Morocco. As is his habit, Youssef unpacked all the rugs to inspect them and hang them in the SoCal sun and fresh air the day before market.
